About Mayo College
One of the finest and oldest boarding schools, Mayo College’s history dates back to its establishment in 1875 AD. Nestled in the culturally rich city of Ajmer, this institution is referred to as the “Eton of the East” and has inspired a generation of students . Mayo College is located at a distance of 2.5 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station.
History and Background
Akin to the public schools in the United Kingdom, Mayo College owed its existence to Richard Bourke, the 6th Earl of Mayou and former Viceroy of India. To provide high-quality education to the leader of princely states, the college opened its door to Maharaja Mangal Singh of Alwar, who was the first student in Alwar to embark on an educational journey.
A remarkable example of architectural finesse, Mayo College was designed in the Indo-Saracenic style by Major Mant, who was under the influence of Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, the state engineer of Jaipur. Built over a period of eight years, it was constructed between 1877 and 1885 AD. The ornate central tower and pavilion adorning the rooftop add to the building’s charm and allure. Collage coats of arms , crafted by Lockwook Kiplings,who was the father of renowned writer Rudyard Kipling and also the former principal of the school of arts in Lahore, add a touch of brilliance to the Mayo collage.
Mayo College Museum
The Danmal Mathur Museum showcases an exquisite collection of armor and antiques. Its nestled within the Jhalwar house of Mayo College. With its rich heritage and knowledge , Danmal Mathur Museum has 18 rooms that have artifacts, photographs, sculptures, and coins. For history enthusiasts, museums provide various insights into various areas of learning and cultural significance. It is to be noted that visitors required permission from the college administration to access the museum.
