History and Background

Akin to the public schools in the United Kingdom, Mayo College owed its existence to Richard Bourke, the 6th Earl of Mayou and former Viceroy of India. To provide high-quality education to the leader of princely states, the college opened its door to Maharaja Mangal Singh of Alwar, who was the first student in Alwar to embark on an educational journey.

Built over a period of eight years, it was constructed between 1877 and 1885 AD. The ornate central tower and pavilion adorning the rooftop add to the building’s charm and allure. Collage coats of arms , crafted by Lockwook Kiplings, who was the father of renowned writer Rudyard Kipling and also the former principal of the school of arts in Lahore, add a touch of brilliance to the Mayo collage.
