Cultural & Historical Significance
The Idu Mishmi tribe is one of the most culturally distinct communities in Northeast India, speaking the Idu Mishmi language and practicing animistic traditions alongside Tibetan Buddhist influences. According to local legends, they share lineage with tribes across the Tibetan plateau. Historically, the Dibang Valley remained cut off from the rest of the world, preserving its oral traditions, indigenous herbal medicine practices, and distinctive dress styles. The name “Dibang” comes from the Dri and Talang rivers, which merge to form the Dibang.
