Located in the Western Ghats near Agumbe, Karnataka, Onake Abbi Falls is a beautiful hidden gem for nature lovers and adventure seekers. It’s near the famous hill station of Agumbe, which is called the “Cherapunji of South India.”.
Meaning of the name
The name “Onake translates to “pounding stick in Kannada, which means a pounding rod used in the kitchen. When the waterfall falls from a height, it resembles the shape of a pounding rod.
Onake Abhi falls from a height of approximately 500 feet and creates an impressive view. It’s a seasonal waterfall that is primarily fed by seasonal rivers. If you want to see Onake Abhi Falls at its full glory, then the best time to visit is during the rainy and post-monsoon seasons. The surrounding greenery is vibrant, and the flow is still substantial.
Avoid visiting during summer as the waterfall might dry up.
Trekking
The trek to the waterfall is moderate and involves a journey through the Agumbe forest. A trail of 3-4 km involves a journey through rocky paths and forested terrain. The trail passes through the Western Ghats , a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biodiversity hotspot. Trekkers might spot a variety of flora, fauna, and even reptiles or amphibians unique to this region.

Onake Abbi Location
The major town that is located nearby is Someshwar, from where treks start passing through dense forest. It takes around 1-2 hours to trek to the waterfall.
