About Hazratbal Shrine
One of the holiest Muslim shrines in Kashmir, Hazratbat shrine is located on the northern banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar. Set against the backdrop of the Zabarwan hills, it holds as the custodian of a sacred relic believed to be a hair (Moi-e-Muqqadas) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Known for its peaceful ambiance and spiritual aura, Hazratbal is a vital religious, cultural, and architectural monument that attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors, both from within the Valley and across India.
Historical Background
Originally a garden estate, it was known as Ishrat Mahal. It was during the rule of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan that the location was converted into a prayer hall by Sadiq Khan, the Mughal Subedar of Kashmir, in 1623.
In 1660 AD a major event occurred when the relic of Prophet Muhammad was brought to Kashmir by Syed Abdullah. The relic, after passing through various custodians, found a permanent home at Hazratbal, which was then developed into a major religious site.
Unlike most Mughal-era mosques that were built during the time of Aurangzeb or earlier, Hazratbal continued to evolve architecturally until the 20th century.

Religious Significance
