About Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in the northern reaches of Wayanad district, Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is a pristine reserve that forms part of the larger Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Spread over 344 square kilometers, the sanctuary is shared with the neighboring state of Karnataka, where it connects with the famous Nagarhole and Bandipur reserves.
Known for its rich biodiversity, open forests, and thrilling jeep safaris, Tholpetty is a favorite destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers exploring Kerala’s green highlands.
Flora and Landscape
Tholpetty’s terrain is a blend of tropical dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and patches of bamboo groves and teak plantations. The sanctuary is dotted with waterholes that attract wildlife, especially during the dry season, offering excellent viewing opportunities.
The rolling hills, thick undergrowth, and stretches of grassland create a wild, untamed charm unique to this part of the Western Ghats.

Tholpetty is home to a wide range of animals and is one of the best places in Kerala to spot large mammals in their natural habitat. Commonly sighted species include:

Best Time to Visit
