Overview

Ajaygarh Fort is an ancient stronghold that is located in the picturesque town of Ajaigarh, in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district. On a flat-topped of the Vindhyan ranges, the fort starts at a height of 688 meters, serving as the capital of the Chandelas. The architectural marvel is of compelling beauty and offers panoramic views of the magnificent rivers.

History of Ajaygarh Fort

The glory of the Chandela dynasty unraveled with the architectural finesse and precision of the grand fort. One can immerse themselves in a treasure trove of exploration once they visit the fort. Ajaygarh Fort has two magnificent temples and two rock-cut tanks, aptly named Ganga and Yamuna. A temple from the Chandela times, dedicated to Raja Parmardi Deva, shows the craftsmanship and devotion of the era. Three dilapidated temples built in the Khajuraho style show the architectural prowess of the Chandela dynasty. In the fort,  there is no use for mortals robust walls built from the stones show the architectural brilliance of the Chandelas. 

Exploring Ajaygarh Fort

Visitors have to climb 500 steps to reach the entrance of the fort. History comes alive in front of your eyes once you reach the top. The absence of signboards, maps, and human habitation at the top makes the place unspoiled. Carry water and food to ensure a comfortable visit. A new chapter of history is unearthed when you traverse the hallowed ground of this ancient stronghold.

Ajaygarh Fort opens to visitors from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The sheer beauty of the sunset and historical significance make the place a must-visit destination for avid explorers.

By Car:

Traveling by car is a popular choice for those seeking flexibility and independence. Ajaygarh Fort is approximately 33 km away from Panna and 65 km away from Khajuraho. If you are driving from Panna, you can take the Panna-Katni Road, also known as NH 43, which leads to Ajaygarh. From Khajuraho, you can take the Khajuraho-Ajaygarh Road, which offers a scenic drive through the picturesque countryside. It is advisable to use GPS or a map for navigation and to plan the journey in advance.

train

By Train:

If you prefer a train journey, the nearest railway station to Ajaygarh Fort is the Panna Railway Station, which is well-connected to major cities in India. From the railway station, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach Ajaygarh. Another option is to take a train to Khajuraho Railway Station, which is located around 65 km away from Ajaygarh. From Khajuraho, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the fort.
