Khajuraho is home to numerous magnificent temples each with its own unique charm and significance. Capturing the essence of the Eastern group of Khajuraho temple, Brahma temple is an ancient gem. 

History and Architecture of Brahma Temple

Symbolizing the creator of the world, the temple is dedicated to the four-headed Lord Brahma. Brahma temple was constructed during the date back to 900 AD and is one of the oldest structures in the eastern group of temples. The name of the temple is kept due to the presence of a four-faced idol in the sanctum,  However, historical analysis suggests that the temple was initially dedicated to Lord Vishnu as several Vishnu’s images are found on the lintel of the Sanctum door. 

The Temple design is simply constructed from a harmonious blend of granite and sandstone. Its layout features a modest sanctum on which a pyramid-shaped Shikahara stands. The temple is without a mandap and is adorned with an entrance porch for visitors.

Outer Walls of the temple are adorned with sculptures of Ganga and Yamuna adding a touch of divine beauty. Intricately carved windows projecting from the northern and southern walls look more revealing aesthetic. Perched on a raised platform temple emanates a tranquil and serene ambiance that provides a respite from the bustling world.
