History of Karnala Bird Sanctuary
Karnala Fort is an ancient marvel that is situated within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. The history of the Karnala Fort dates back to the 12th century and has witnessed the rise and fall of various dynasties. It was first in the hands of the Devgiri Yadavas, then fell to Muslim rulers from Daulatabad, the Gujarat Sultanate, and Portugal. Finally, in 1818 AD, the fort fell under British control.
The trek to the Karnala Fort takes approximately an hour. Upon reaching it, you will find that the fort comprises two small towers, one at a higher level and the other in a lower area. At the center of the fort stands an impressive Pandu tower that is made of basalt pillars and has an impressive height of 125 feet.
At the fort, you will be greeted with stunning panoramic views of Prabalgad and Rajmachi, making it a photographer’s delight.
Flora and Fauna of Karnala Bird Sanctuary
Whether you are a birdwatcher or looking to spot rare migratory species, Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Spread over an area of 12.11 sq km, Karnala Bird Sanctuary has something special for nature lovers, trekkers, and bird enthusiasts.
Throughout the year, a wide variety of avian visitors visit the natural habitat of the sanctuary. During the monsoon season, the golden-backed, racket-tailed drongo, heart-spotted woodpecker, and golden-backed woodpecker can be seen here. Malabar trogon, three-toed kingfisher, and ashy minivet are three rare and elusive birds that have been spotted, making them a treasure trove for bird lovers. Over 150 species of residents and 37 species of migratory birds call the Karnala bird sanctuary their home.
In the winter season, visitors can catch glimpses of black-headed cuckoo-shrike, blue-throated red-breasted flycatcher, and blue-headed rock thrush. The sanctuary becomes a delightful playground for migratory birds.
Aside from enchanting birds, the sanctuary is home to an array of wildlife. Within the sanctuary, rhesus monkeys, wild boars, and langurs roam freely. In their natural habitat, visitors can experience a close encounter with these animals.
