About Tengnoupal
Tengnoupal, located in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur, is a serene hill town celebrated for its panoramic landscapes and rich tribal heritage. Perched at an elevation of around 2,500 feet, the area offers sweeping views of misty hills, dense forests, and lush valleys.
It serves as an important gateway on the Imphal–Moreh road, making it not only a scenic stop but also a culturally vibrant one. The town is inhabited by diverse tribal communities whose traditions, crafts, and festivals bring color and life to this peaceful region.
Historical Significance
Tengnoupal’s history is deeply intertwined with its strategic location. During the Second World War in 1942, the town was bombed by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) as part of military operations in the Indo–Burma region.
Owing to its commanding position along important mountain passes, Tengnoupal became one of the most significant army bases in the area and continues to serve as a strategic military headquarters today. In the 1960s and 1970s, Tengnoupal functioned as the district headquarters before the administrative center was shifted to Chandel in 1974.
Cultural Significance
The tribal culture of Tengnoupal is deeply woven into its daily life. Various indigenous groups—such as the Tangkhul, Kuki, and other hill tribes—maintain unique customs, folk dances, and music that have been preserved for generations. Handwoven shawls, bamboo crafts, and beadwork are popular handicrafts from this area.

How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airport is Imphal International Airport, about 70 km away. From there, taxis and buses operate regularly towards Tengnoupal.
By Road: Tengnoupal lies along National Highway 102, making it easily accessible from Imphal and Moreh. The drive is scenic, with winding roads through hill forests.
By Rail: The closest functional railway link is at Jiribam, roughly 270 km away, from where road transport is required to reach Tengnoupal.
