Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Bargarh district of western Odisha, is one of the most scenic protected areas of the state. Nestled amidst the picturesque Barapahad hills and overlooking the massive Hirakud Reservoir, the sanctuary is a unique blend of rugged landscapes, dense forests, and rich biodiversity.
Spread over nearly 350 sq. km, it is not just a haven for wildlife but also a place of historical and ecological significance.
Natural Beauty and Landscape
The sanctuary is characterized by undulating hills, dry deciduous forests, and scenic valleys. The Barapahad hill ranges form the backbone of this forest, while the Hirakud Reservoir on its boundary adds a breathtaking aquatic charm.
The sunrise and sunset views over the reservoir, as seen from the sanctuary, are among its most captivating sights. Seasonal streams and perennial water sources within the forests further enhance the habitat diversity.
Flora and Fauna
Debrigarh is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna typical of central Indian dry forests. Visitors can spot wild animals such as leopards, hyenas, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, and wild boars. The sanctuary is also a paradise for birdwatchers, especially during winter, when thousands of migratory birds like ducks, geese, and storks flock to the adjoining Hirakud Reservoir. The forest vegetation is dominated by species like sal, teak, and other dry deciduous trees.
History and Heritage
The sanctuary is also historically significant, as it served as a hideout for the freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai during his rebellion against the British in the 19th century.
Several caves and vantage points in the Barapahad hills still echo the tales of his resistance movement. This blend of natural and historical heritage makes Debrigarh stand apart from other sanctuaries.

Eco-tourism has been steadily growing in Debrigarh. Safari drives through the sanctuary give visitors a chance to experience the rich biodiversity up close. Birdwatching, boating in the Hirakud Reservoir, and nature trails are popular activities.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant, and migratory birds are in abundance. During the monsoon, the lush greenery and flowing streams make the landscape especially beautiful, though safaris may be restricted.
How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airport is Jharsuguda Airport, about 80 km away, with connectivity to major cities.
By Rail: The closest railway station is Bargarh Road, around 40 km from the sanctuary. Sambalpur, a major railway junction, is also nearby (60 km).
By Road: Debrigarh is well connected by road, with buses and taxis available from Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Jharsuguda.
