Overview and History

Eklingji Temple is an ancient Hindu Shiva temple that is one of the top places of pilgrimage in Rajasthan. The temple is located in the town of Ekligji, or Kailashpur, which is at a distance of 24 km from the city center of Udaipur. In this article, we will delve into the history and cultural significance of this temple. 

“Ek” means one, and “Ling” refers to life-giving; the Eklingji temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The revered deity of the former Mewar ruler holds great importance.  Construction of the temple was started in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty. During history, the temple has suffered invasions by invaders that were restored and preserved by various kings. ‘

Architectural of Eklingji Temple

Constructed using marble and sandstone, the temple has an impressive collection of 108 temples that feature on the high walls of the temple. A stunning complex on the banks of the Indersagar Lake looks stunning. A beautifully carved tower with a pyramidal-style roof, the shrine is a double-storied structure. At the entrance of the temple, Nandi Bull, the loyal bull of Lord Shiva, rests. A statue of the temple’s founder, Bappa Rawal, with his hands clasped, is installed. Apart from this, sculptures of Karitkeya, Yamuna, Goddess Parvati, Ganesha, and Ganga shrines are located within the temple complex. 

The black stone statue of Shiva in the sanctum santorum looks beautiful for  It’s a face-statue,  with Surya facing east, Shiva facing south, Vishnu facing north, and Brahma facing west. The divine aura and intricate details leave the visitors in complete admiration.
