History of Jagdish Temple
Located at a distance of just 3 kilometers from the Udaipur City Railway Station, Jagdish Temple beckons devotees and tourists alike. The history of the temple dates back to 1651 AD, When it was commissioned by Maharana Jagat Singh, one of the prominent rulers of the Mewar dynasty. Showcasing the ruler’s dedication and devotion, the architectural marvel was built at an estimated cost of 1.5 million rupees.

Jagdish Temple stands at an impressive height of 79 feet with its elephants, horsemen, dancers, and musicians. On reaching the entrance, two stone elephants greet visitors.
It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, also known as Laxmi Narayan, the preserver of the Universe according to Hindu mythology. One must ascend a flight of 32 marble steps to reach the inner sanctum of the Jagdish temple. At the entrance, there is a brass image of Garuda, the Vahana of Lord Vishnu. The striking four-armed black stone image of Lord Vishnu greets visitors once they enter the main shrine. There are four smaller shrines that surround the main shrine. It includes Lord Ganesh, Goddess Shakti, Lord Shiva, and the sun god. The presence of these shrines increases the aura of the temple complex.
Jagdish Temple boasts a mesmerizing blend of elegance and grandeur that showcases the Indo-Aryan style of architecture. The Jagdish temple boasts a three-story structure that is supported by beautifully carved pillars. Vibrantly painted walls, decorated ceilings, and a spacious hall are the notable features of the temple.
Mythological stories are depicted through intricate carving. The craftsmanship of that era is meticulously carved through 50 pillars on the first and second floors of the temple. Those details on the pillars are a true testament to the temple’s beauty and allure.
In front of the temple, there is a stone slab bearing an inscription referring to Maharana Jagat Singh. It serves as a reminder of its historical significance and pays homage to the ruler who commissioned and brought this architectural masterpiece to life.
Every July, Coinciding with the Rath Yatra of Puri Jagannath, an annual car festival takes place. It adds an extra dose of fervor and cheerfulness to the temple times serene surroundings.
