Dwaj temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Jayanti, Dhwaj Temple is a beautiful temple located in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. At an elevation of 2100 meters above sea level, the temple can be reached after trekking for 4 km in 2 hours. While trekking to the temple, the beautiful views of the surrounding peaks take away all tiredness. The temple is situated on a hilltop in Pithoragarh town, and from the main road, it is 10 km away.
Mythological story
According to mythology, the temple is associated with Lord Shiva. At the temple spot, it is believed that Lord Shiva slew the demon Shumbh-Nishumbh. He, along with the goddess Jayanti, an incarnation of Parvati, established the victory of good over evil. The name “Dhwaj” signifies the same.
