About Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary
Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district, is one of the oldest sanctuaries in West Bengal and a haven for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
Known for its dense sal forests, meandering rivers, and abundant biodiversity, it forms an extension of the famous Gorumara National Park. The name “Chapramari” comes from “Chapra,” a type of small fish found in its rivers, and “Mari,” meaning abundance.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
The sanctuary is famous for its large herds of elephants, which can often be spotted roaming freely. Other wildlife includes Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, barking deer, and leopards, while the elusive Royal Bengal tiger is occasionally seen.
It is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with species like the green magpie, scarlet minivet, Indian treepie, and hornbills making the forest lively with their calls.
Landscape and Natural Beauty
The sanctuary’s landscape is enriched by the Teesta and Murti rivers, which flow nearby and add to its scenic charm. The lush sal and teak forests, combined with grasslands, create an idyllic habitat for both mammals and birds. From various watchtowers inside the sanctuary, visitors can get panoramic views of the forest and observe animals in their natural surroundings.
Activities and Attractions
Popular activities here include jungle safaris and birdwatching tours, which provide an immersive experience of the wilderness. Photography enthusiasts often visit to capture the sanctuary’s vibrant wildlife and serene landscapes. The Chapramari Watchtower is a key attraction for observing herds of elephants and gaurs during dawn and dusk.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to explore Chapramari is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and animal sightings are more frequent. The monsoon season is avoided as the sanctuary remains closed due to heavy rains and flooding risks.
How to Reach
Chapramari is easily accessible from Lataguri (12 km) and Chalsa (10 km), which are well-connected by road. The nearest railway station is Malbazar (20 km), while Bagdogra Airport (75 km) serves as the closest air hub.
