About Pilak Archaeological Site

The Pilak Archaeological Site, located in South Tripura’s Belonia sub-division, is one of the most important historical and cultural heritage spots in the state. The site dates back to the 8th–9th centuries CE and represents a fascinating blend of Buddhist and Hindu religious art.

Excavations have revealed terracotta plaques, stone sculptures, and architectural remains that reflect the cultural exchanges between Bengal, Myanmar, and Southeast Asia. Pilak was once a thriving center of Mahayana Buddhism and later became a seat of Hindu Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions, making it a symbol of Tripura’s syncretic heritage.

Attractions at Pilak

Visitors can see large stone carvings of Avalokitesvara, Narasimha, and other deities that highlight the fusion of Buddhist and Hindu iconography. Terracotta plaques and decorative motifs recovered from the site showcase the artistry of the Gupta and post-Gupta periods.

The ruins of monasteries (viharas) and temples suggest that Pilak was once a vibrant religious settlement. Archaeologists have compared Pilak’s heritage with other important Buddhist sites such as Mainamati (Bangladesh) and Nalanda (Bihar).

Walking through Pilak feels like stepping into a historical tapestry where myth, religion, and art coexisted harmoniously. The site is surrounded by serene landscapes, with paddy fields and small villages adding to its charm.
