About Khinmey Monastery
Located about 7 km southeast of Tawang town, Khinmey Monastery also known as Thegchog Namgyal Monastery, is a vibrant center of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, the oldest of the four major Buddhist traditions in Tibet.
Surrounded by rolling meadows, alpine forests, and snow-kissed peaks, the monastery radiates a warmth and spiritual charm that draws both pilgrims and travelers seeking a quieter alternative to the bustling Tawang Monastery.
History & Significance
Khinmey Monastery was founded in 1440 by Lama Karchen Yeshi Gelek, a direct disciple of the famous Nyingma master Terton Pema Lingpa, one of Bhutan’s most revered treasure revealers (tertons). Its establishment marked the spread of the Nyingma lineage into what is now Arunachal Pradesh, making it a crucial spiritual link between Bhutan, Tibet, and the Monpa communities of Tawang. The name “Khinmey” means place of profound happiness, reflecting the sense of joy and peace the site aims to cultivate.
Over centuries, the monastery has served not only as a religious hub but also as a cultural archive preserving ancient manuscripts, ritual dances, and oral histories that form part of the Nyingma heritage in this Himalayan frontier.
Architecture & Spiritual Atmosphere
Main Prayer Hall: Decorated with intricate thangka paintings depicting Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), the founder of Tibetan Buddhism in Bhutan and Tibet, alongside other Nyingma masters.

By Road: Khinmey Monastery is an easy 20–30 minute drive from Tawang town, with shared taxis and private vehicles available.
By Air: The nearest airport is Tezpur Airport (Assam). From Tezpur, the road journey to Tawang via Bomdila and Dirang is about 14–16 hours.
By Rail: The closest railway station is Rangapara North (Assam), followed by a road trip into Tawang.
