About Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimgha Swamy
Dedicated to Lord Narasimha (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu), Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimgha Swamy temple is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. The temple is situated on Simhachalam Hill at an altitude of 800 m above sea level. It is one of the 32 Narasimha Kshetras in India and holds immense religious significance for devotees.
Lord Narasimha
Lord Varha Narasimha Swamay is a combined form of Varaha (boar) and Narasimha (man-lion) and represents protection and destruction from evil.
Mythology
According to Mytholgy, The temple is located on the same site where Lord Vishnu rescued Prahlada from his demon father, Hiranyakashipu
History
Inscriptions on the temple belong to various dynasties, including Cholas, Pallavas, and Eastern Gangas. It’s said that the temple dates back to the 11th century. The Chola King Kulothunga I and the Gajapati Kings of Odisha made significant contributions to the temple.
Architecture
The temple is built in Kalinga architectural style with carvings, sculptures, and a gopuram (tower). The main sanctum (Garbhagriha) contains the idol of Lord Narasimha in self-manifested form. Its remains are covered with sandalwood paste throughout the year. The layer of sandalwood paste is believed to keep it cool and serene throughout the year. An intricately designed gold-plated chariot used during ceremonial processions is kept inside the temple.
Chandanotsavam (Sandalwood Festival)
A famous event that happens once a year during Akshaya Tritiya is when the paste of Sandalwoold is removed from the idol and shows to the devotees. It’s called Chandanotsavam.
Best Time to Visit
Although the temple is open all year round, the weather between October and February is the best time to visit . Reaching Akshaya Tritiya for the Chandanotsavam festival is quite an experience in itself.

The temple is open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
