About Anasagar Lake
Anasagar Lake, a serene and captivating artificial lake, is one of the must-visit attractions in Ajmer. Surrounded by lush gardens and historic pavilions, the artificial lake is nestled in the heart of Ajmer, Rajasthan.
Historical Significance and Creation
Anasagar Lake is the largest lake in Ajmer and was constructed by Arnoraja Chauhan between 1135 and 1150 AD, who was also the grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan. The lake was named after him. Spanning over an area of 13 km, the lake was created by building a dam across the luni, or Lavanavari, river. Holding approximately 4.75 cubic meters of water, the lake has a maximum depth of 4.4 meters.
Legends and Spiritual Significance of Anasagar Lake
According to the local legend, once Sufi saing Moinuddin Chistichisti arrived in Ajmer along with followers, his followers were prohibited from using the water of Anasagar Lake. Monuddin Chisti requested, and a cup of water was granted to him, but as soon as the cup was filled, the lake’s water dried up. Seeing this event, local people gathered for the return of the water, and the saint graciously compiled This event has garnered Moinuddin Chisti a large number of followers and established his spiritual presence in the region.
Attractions around the lake
Daulat bagh garden is a famous garden set beside the Anasagar lake . It was constructed by the Mugal emperor Jahngair. Shah Jahan the third son of Jahangir, constructed five pavilions between the Daulat bagh garden and lake.
There is a Circuit house on a hill near the lake that used to be Lodha’s residence. This is one of the main tourist attractions there. There is an island in the center of the lake which is accessible by boat. Boats could be hired from the east side of the Daulat Bagh. There are Chowpatty and Jetty walkway next to each other and Baradari to capture the scenic view of the lake
ARV Group’s island
One of the main attractions is an island in the middle of the lake. Boats are available from the east side of the Daulat bagh to reach the ARV group of islands. Around the perimeter of the lake, Chowpatty and Jetty walkway provide a scenic view of the lake during sunrise and sunset. Locals often come for jogging, exercising or to get together with friends and family.
Rishi udyan
Dayanand saraswati, the founder of arya Samaj, wishes his ashes were scattered at the Rishi udyan.The garden is on the bank of Ana Sagar lake and has an excellent sunset point. It has Arya samaj Temple, which is quite famous for Aruasamaj melā held for 3 days in a year. Apart from this, every morning and evening, the practice of yajna filled the atmosphere with spirituality.
Water pollution problems
Anasagar lake is breathing heavily under the water pollution problem. Sewage water from the city flows unchecked into the lake, causing water hyacinth. Its exotic shrubs grow at a rapid pace on the surface of water, which causes clogging, sedimentation, and deoxygenation, resulting in a reduction in water quality . Due to all this, Anasagar Lake has lost its old shine when a number of migratory birds visit the lake in a migratory season.The whole biodiversity and ecosystem of the water body are under threat.
A number of efforts are being taken by the local administration, but they have failed to bring noticeable results.
Ideal Time to Visit and Boat
The best time to visit Anasagar Lake is between October and March, when the climate is pleasant and the water level is at its peak.
Timings and Boating Charges
Anasagar Lake is open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., allowing ample time to immerse oneself in its serene atmosphere. Boating facilities are available, with a charge of Rs. 160 per person, providing a delightful experience on the lake’s tranquil waters.
