The Narmada River, at its origin, flows through the mountain, forming many waterfalls along the way. The Dhoodh Dhara waterfall is the second waterfall that falls after the Kapil Dhara waterfall. Falling from a height of 10 feet, the waterfall looks stunning in the Amarkantak Valley. 

Popular belief of Dhoodh Dhara waterfall

There is an interesting story behind the name of the waterfall. It’s believed that the sage Durvasa was doing a penance here, Happy from its worship, Mother Narmada appeared to him and offered him a drink of milk. Since then, the Narmada River has gotten its name, Doodh Dhara, which means “streams of milk.”

Apart from the waterfall, the sage Durvasa’s cave is also a significant attraction in the area. The cave features a shivling on which water continuously falls, and Sage Durvasa used to consecrate Shiva every day with Narmada water. The cave has a cool and refreshing environment, making it an ideal spot for meditation and relaxation.

There is a cave beside the waterfall, Durvasa Cave, that offers a cool and refreshing environment. An ideal spot for meditation and relaxation, it was believed that sage Durvasa meditated in the cave. He consecrates Shiva every day with Narmada water. 

An ideal spot for picnics the place is surrounded by thick wood and dense forest and situated on the western edge of the Amarkantak valley.

The best time to visit the waterfall is during the monsoon season when the waterfall falls at its capacity and the temperature is moderate.

How to Reach Dhoodh Dhara waterfall

By Road:

One can reach Amarkantak by road from nearby cities like Bilaspur, Anuppur, Shahdol, and Jabalpur. Private taxis, buses, and shared cabs are easily available from these cities to reach the waterfall.The waterfall is not accessible by road, one has to walk few hundred meters from Kapil Dhara waterfall.

By Train:

The nearest railway station to Amarkantak is Pendra Road railway station, which is about 17 km away. From there, one can take a taxi or a shared cab to reach the waterfall.

By Air:

The nearest airport to Amarkantak is the Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur, which is about 240 km away. From there, one can take a taxi or a shared cab to reach the waterfall.
