Overview

The Vijay Stambh, also known as the Tower of Victory, is one of the most iconic structures of the fort that symbolises the bravery and victory of the Rajputs. The historical monument is  within the Chittorgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan.

History and Architecture of Vijay Stambh

Perched on a hill, it was built by Maharana Kumbha in 1448 CE to celebrate his victory over the combined armies of Malwa and Gujarat. It celebrated the strength and valour of the Rajput warrior and was a reminder of the military prowess and architectural excellence of the Rajput rulers.

The Vijay Stambh features 9 stories and a height of  37.19 meters (122 feet). Made of red sandstone and white marble, it is styled in Rajput architectural style with intricate carvings and sculptures. To reach the top of Stambh, the tower has a spiral staircase of 157 steps and once you reach,  it offers the panoramic views of the surrounding plains.

The upper storey of the temple chronicles the lives and accomplishments of the rulers of Chittaur and was meticulously recorded by Rana Kumbha’s court scholar Atri, later completed by his son Mahesh.

For history and art enthusiasts, Vijay Stambh is a visual delight. The tower is adorned with images of gods and goddesses representing different seasons. Musical instruments and weapons The Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana are shown through sculptural art. Vijay Stambh is a classical example of Rajput architecture. 

Highlighting the acceptance of diverse faiths, the tower is an embodiment of religious pluralism. Images of Jain goddesses feature on the topmost storey. Allah was carved in Arabic nine times on the third storey and eight times on the eighth. Padamavti reflects the inclusive nature of the Rajputs.

Timings and Entry Fees

Vijay Stambh is open for visitors from 9:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. As the tower is situated inside the fort complex, the entry fee is included in the fort entry fee. For Indian visitors, the entry fee is Rs. 15, while foreigners are required to pay Rs. 200. Exploring Vijay Stambh is an affordable and enriching experience that should not be missed when visiting Chittorgarh.
