The Story of the Sunken Ship
For many years, one of Candolim Beach’s most unusual attractions was the MV River Princess, a large cargo vessel that ran aground off the coast in June 2000. During the monsoon of 2001, the ship became partially submerged and remained stranded near the shoreline for years.
Over time, the rusting vessel turned into an unexpected landmark and became a favorite subject for photographers and curious visitors. Despite numerous attempts by authorities and private contractors to salvage the ship, the operation faced repeated challenges. Eventually, after years of legal and technical hurdles, the vessel was dismantled and removed in 2015. Although the ship is no longer visible today, many long-time visitors still remember it as one of Candolim’s most distinctive sights.
