How Sandalwood is Processed into Oil

Sandalwood oil comes from the heartwood of mature sandalwood trees, especially those found in regions like Marayoor and parts of Karnataka.

Unlike most trees, sandalwood is valued not for its outer wood, but for its  inner heartwood , which contains the aromatic oil. The tree must typically grow for  15–20 years or more  before it develops sufficient oil content.

Step 1: Harvesting the Tree

Careful Selection

* Only mature trees are selected

* Younger trees contain very little oil

Whole Tree Extraction

* The entire tree is uprooted—not just cut

* Even roots are used because they contain high oil concentration

This is why sandalwood is so valuable— every part of the tree is utilized .

Step 2: Removing Sapwood

After harvesting:

* The outer layer (sapwood) is removed

* Only the dense inner  heartwood  is retained

The heartwood is darker, heavier, and richly aromatic—it is the core raw material for oil extraction.

Step 3: Chipping & Powdering

The heartwood is then:

* Cut into small chips

* Ground into coarse powder

This increases the surface area, making oil extraction more efficient.

Step 4: Soaking & Preparation

Before distillation:

* The powdered wood is soaked in water

* This softens the material

* Helps release the oil during heating

Step 5: Steam Distillation (Core Process)

This is the most crucial step.

How it works:

* The soaked wood powder is placed in a distillation chamber

* Steam is passed through it for several hours (sometimes days)

* Heat causes the oil to evaporate along with steam

The mixture of steam + oil vapor is then condensed back into liquid.

Separation

After condensation:

* Oil separates from water naturally

* Sandalwood oil floats or settles depending on density

This collected oil is the  pure sandalwood essential oil .

Step 6: Filtration & Storage

The extracted oil is:

* Filtered to remove impurities

* Stored in airtight containers

Aging

Like fine wine, sandalwood oil improves with age:

* Aroma becomes deeper and smoother

* Value increases over time

Why Sandalwood Oil is So Valuable ?

 High Yield Difficulty

* Large quantity of wood → small amount of oil.

* A mature tree yields only a limited amount.

Time Factor

* Trees take decades to mature.

 Unique Aroma

* Woody, sweet, long-lasting fragrance.

* Acts as a natural fixative in perfumes.

Uses of Sandalwood Oil

Perfumery

* Base note in luxury perfumes

 Spiritual Use

* Used in incense and religious rituals.

  Ayurveda & Skincare

* Cooling and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sustainability & Regulation

Due to overexploitation (including during the era of Koose Munisamy Veerappan):

* Sandalwood is now heavily regulated in India.

* Government controls harvesting and trade.

* Sustainable plantations are being promoted.

Regions like Marayoor are protected to preserve natural populations.

Final Perspective

The journey of sandalwood oil—from a slow-growing tree hidden in the forest to a tiny vial of fragrance—is a story of  time, patience, and precision .

It explains why sandalwood has been treasured for centuries—and why protecting these forests is not just important, but essential.
