Historical Significance and Fires
Rajwada Palace has witnessed several dramatic events throughout its history. Despite its magnificence, the palace suffered major destruction multiple times due to devastating fires and conflicts.
The first major attack occurred in 1801 when Sarjerao Ghadge, a commander linked to the Scindia dynasty, set parts of the palace on fire. Later, the structure was reconstructed between 1818 and 1826. Another fire broke out in 1834, severely damaging the upper wooden sections of the building.
The most destructive fire occurred in 1984, causing extensive damage to the palace. Much of the original structure was lost, and only the front façade survived in its authentic form. However, efforts were later made to restore the palace and preserve its historical importance. Under the guidance of H.H. Ushadevi Holkar, restoration work began again in 2006 to revive the grandeur of this heritage monument.

Today, Rajwada Palace is not only a historical monument but also an important cultural center in Indore. The palace complex features beautifully maintained gardens, fountains, and an artificial waterfall that add to its charm.
