In 1037 AD, the Kachhawa Rajputs triumphed over Amer, ruling over it for several centuries until the capital was eventually shifted from Amer to Jaipur in the 18th century. The construction of Amer Fort commenced in 1592 AD under the guidance of Raja Man Singh, a trusted general in Emperor Akbar’s court and one of his esteemed Navaratnas (nine gems). Over time, successive rulers contributed to the expansion and embellishment of this architectural marvel. Finally, in 1727 AD, Sawai Jai Singh II, the visionary ruler, relocated the capital from Amer to Jaipur, marking the end of an era.
Architecture of Amer Fort
Amer Fort exemplifies a harmonious blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles, leaving visitors captivated by its sheer magnificence. Fashioned predominantly from red sandstone, the fort majestically overlooks the tranquil Maota Lake, which served as its primary water source. Divided into four distinct sections, each boasting its own entry gate and courtyard, the palace presents a captivating journey through history and artistry.
Enter through the Suraj Pole (Sun Gate), the main gateway leading to the grand Jaleb Chowk. This sprawling courtyard served as the venue for triumphant parades, where victorious armies showcased their war spoils upon returning from battles. Facing eastward and basking in the gentle rays of the rising sun, this gate derives its name from its orientation. Within this realm lie the resplendent Shila Devi Temple and the exquisite Ganesh Pol.
As you step further into Amer Fort, the second courtyard unveils the Diwan-i-Am or the Public Audience Hall. Distinguished by a double row of columns, this elevated platform boasts 27 colonnades, each adorned with an elephant-shaped capital and accompanied by elegant galleries. It was within these hallowed halls that the common people would gather to meet the king and present their grievances.
Moving deeper into the fort, the third courtyard reveals the private quarters of the Maharaja, his family, and his attendants. Enter through the ornate Ganesh Pol, embellished with captivating mosaics and sculptures. Here, two symmetrical buildings face each other, separated by a meticulously manicured Mughal-style garden.
Prepare to be mesmerized as you step into the Sheesh Mahal, or the Mirror Palace, a prime attraction within Amer Fort. The walls and ceilings of this opulent chamber are adorned with countless pieces of mirror, intricately reflecting stunning floral paintings.
