The structure is located in the heart of Jaisalmer city and is 1.5 km away from the Jaisalmer Railway Station. History of Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 AD by Maharawal Jaisal Singh. The fort has stood the test of time and witnessed numerous encounters between the Mughals, Bhattis, and Rathores of Jodhpur. Mughal rulers like Alauddin Khilji and Humayun have attacked the fort, but it has stood the test of time. Traversing the Silk Road, refugees and caravans stopped at the fort for rest.
Architecture of Jaisalmer Fort
Spanning an impressive length of 1500 feet and a width of 750 feet, the grand fort sits atop a 250-foot-high hill. Jaisalmer Fort architecture is a blend of Rajput and Islamic styles, and it is well-equipped to fend off attacks and attacks on the city. 99 Bastions and a 15-foot-tall wall at the basement form a double line that itself is protected by a 30-foot-tall wall surrounding it on all sides.
During its peak time, nearly one-quarter of the town’s population resides within the fort. It houses palaces, temples, and homes within the fort complex. A regular source of water is pumped to homes through numerous wells. Different parts of the fort are interlocked with narrow, winding pathways that create an intricate maze, adding to its charm.
Transported to a bygone era, Jaisalmer Fort has four imposing entrances, named Hawa Pol, Bhoota Pol, Ganesh Pol, and Rang Pol. It showcases the impressive craftsmanship of the glorious past. As you step inside the fort complex, the renowned marble throne will come across you. A museum inside the fort has a rich collection of arms, utensils, dresses, and ornaments from the Rajput kingdom.
A masterpiece, the five-story Tazia Tower stands parallel to the Maharawal Palace. Intricate detailing and elegant design add to the tower, which showcases the decorative Bengali-styled roofs and adds to the overall grandeur of Jaisalmer Fort.
Dedicated to the goddess of wealth and prosperity, the Lakshmi Temple is another popular pilgrimage site within the Fort Complex. There are two significant Jain temples that, with intricate sculptures and breathtaking architecture, show the Jain culture and heritage.
