Kareri Lake, or Kareri Dal, is a high glacial lake located at an altitude of 9000 feet above sea level in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The trek offers stunning scenery, ranging from subtropical pine forests to rocky grasslands at high altitudes. Kareri Lake, a glacial lake that feeds water from the melting snow of the Dhauladhar mountains, and Nyund Nallah, which feeds from the lake, act both as a guide and a refreshment place.
Kareri Lake Trek is surrounded by Chir and Chilgoza pines, which provide a habitat zone for various bird species. It’s a beautiful place for bird watchers to be.
Kareri lake trek itinerary
The nearest bus stand is in Dharamshala or McLeodganj. You can travel overnight by road bus from Delhi or Chandigarh. Upon arrival in Dharamshala or McLeodganj, check into your hotel and relax for the day. Spend the evening exploring the local markets and trying out local delicacies. Local buses to Ghera village start running at 8:00 a.m. Kareri village is 2 kilometers away from Ghera village.
Another option is to take a direct cab from the Dharamshala bus station to Kareri village. Generally, the cab charges Rs 800-1000 for a group of 4–6 people.
Anyone who wishes to spend time in Kareri village can book the forest rest house. Remember, there is hardly a shop here, so buy all the stuff from Ghera village.
Kareri village to Reoti village: 7 km
After crossing the forest rest house, you will travel on the paved road for 3 km, connecting to the village of Nolli. Do not cross the bridge but follow the trail and descend along the river for 2 km. After 2 km, cross the river and follow the trail for 4 km, which is not steep. From here, you will come across the Reoti Village.
Reoti Village: You will get an option of eateries, though they are not very fancy. Tent and sleeping bag facilities are also available at the place.
Reoti to Kareri lake: 6 km
The altitude suddenly ascends from here, and the trail takes you to alpine green meadows and steep stones along the riverside of Nyund Nala. Walking along the trail and crossing the last hillock, you will come across the majestic Kareri Lake.
At Kareri Lake, you can pitch a tent along the lake if you have your own. Shiv Shakti Temple near the lake provides a good supply of food and water.
