Situated at an altitude of 2581 feet, Medigeshi Fort is an ancient fort that is located in Madigeshi village. A testament to the rich heritage of Karnataka, the fort dates back to the Vijayanagara era.
History
Medigeshi Fort was built with strategic significance by Neggi Reddy, who was a local chieftain of the Vijayanagra era. The fort’s name is derived from the nickname ‘Midigeshi,’ given to Nagi Reddy’s wife due to her ankle-length hair.
Over the years, various dynasties ruled the place, including Marathas, Haider Ali, and Tipu Sultan. Finally, it came under the rule of British forces led by Lord Cornwallis.
Architecture
Built in traditional fort architecture, there are seven gates to enter Medigeshi fort . Although some gates are now in dilapidated condition.
Structural Remnants: The fort houses remnants such as a mosque with three arches, two minarets exhibiting fine latticed designs, and granaries. Nearby, two dhones named Musure dhone and Kannerammana dhone stand, showcasing historical water storage structures.
Key Attractions
Hanuman temple
Adding spirituality to the historical setting, in the vicinity of Medigeshi Fort lies a Hanuman temple. Visitors must visit the place to offer prayer and homage to the deity Hanuman.
Venkatramana and Lakshmi Temples
Venkatramana and Lakshmi temples are the two temples that lie at the base of the hill. Visitors can explore these temples, learning more about the culture of the region.
Trekking
To reach the top of the hill fort, you have to begin your ascent from the eastern side. It lies adjacent to the Venkataramana Temple. It’s a flight of nearly 150 steps that passes through doorways and rock patches.
Once you reach the summit, the spectacular panoramic view makes the trek a rewarding experience.
Timing
Medigeshi Fort is open to the public from 6 AM to 6 PM.
