About Renuka Sagar Dam
The Renuka Sagar Dam, also known as the Malaprabha Dam, is one of the most important water reservoirs in Karnataka. Built across the Malaprabha River near Navilatirtha village in Saundatti taluk of Belagavi district, the dam is not only a source of irrigation and drinking water but also a place of scenic beauty and pilgrimage significance.
History and Construction
The dam was constructed in 1974 as part of the Malaprabha Irrigation Project. Its primary purpose was to provide water for irrigation across the Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad, and Belagavi districts, transforming the dry plains of North Karnataka into fertile agricultural land. The dam is named Renuka Sagar after Goddess Renuka, who is highly revered in this region.
The project involved building a 155-meter-long and 45-meter-high dam, creating a vast reservoir that today spans over 54,000 hectares. The dam also supports hydroelectric power generation, adding to Karnataka’s energy resources.
