About Sangolli Rayanna Memorial
Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Memorial stands as a proud tribute to one of Karnataka’s most revered freedom fighters, Sangolli Rayanna. Known for his unwavering resistance against British colonial rule in the early 19th century, Rayanna became a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. Located at Nandagad village, about 45 km from Belagavi, the memorial not only commemorates his martyrdom but also serves as an inspiration for generations to remember the struggles of India’s unsung heroes.
Life and Legacy of Sangolli Rayanna
Sangolli Rayanna was born in 1798 in Sangolli, Belagavi district, and served as a valiant warrior in the army of Rani Kittur Chennamma, the queen of Kittur who defied the British East India Company. Rayanna was fiercely loyal to Chennamma and played a crucial role in her battles against colonial forces, especially during the Kittur Uprising of 1824.
After Chennamma was captured and imprisoned, Rayanna continued the fight, leading a guerrilla-style resistance against the British across forests and villages. His ability to inspire the common people and his unyielding spirit earned him the title “Krantiveera” (Revolutionary Hero). However, in 1831, he was betrayed, captured by the British, and executed by hanging from a banyan tree in Nandagad. His martyrdom turned him into a legendary figure in Karnataka’s freedom struggle.
