Initially the artificial lake was developed as a man-made reservoir to supply drinking water and irrigation to Chikmagalur town. The water from the lake is also supplied to coffee plantations that thrive in the surrounding valleys.
What makes Hirekolale Lake unique is that it has no commercial setup, no entrance fee, and no fencing—just raw, unfiltered nature. It remains untouched by over-tourism. Mirror-like surfaces and a tranquil atmosphere around create an almost surreal landscape.
