About Abbey Falls
Abbey Falls, one of the top attractions in Coorg, is a captivating destination to visit. Situated just 8 km from the Madikeri bus station, the beauty of the western ghats offers visitors a refreshing retreat into the heart of nature.
Abey waterfall is a harmonious blend of numerous small streams descending from a height of 70 feet. It creates a mesmerizing spectacle as the water plunges into a serene pool. The falls then converge with the river Cauvery, further enhancing the scenic surroundings.
History of Abbey Falls
During the British era, Abbey Fall was called Jessy Falls and was named in memory of Jessy, the daughter of Madikeri’s first British Captain Chaplain. After independence, the waterfall came under the governance of the Indian government. Mr. Neravamda B. Nanaiah acquired the land in the surrounding area. He transformed the area into a cultivated farmland with coffee plantations and spice estates. Today, visitors can see how these things have created a picturesque landscape.
Best Time to Visit Abbey Falls
The best time to visit the Abbey Falls is during the monsoon season, when the cascade is in full glory. However, visitors are advised to remain vigilant, considering the slippery roads and the presence of leeches during the monsoon season.
