If you are a history enthusiast and admirer of architectural splendor, Nalaknad Palace, also known as Naalnaad Areman, is a good place to visit in Coorg. Situated at the base of the Thadiyandamol peaks, the palace is located at a distance of 35 km from Madikeri.
Historical Significance and Architecture
The exquisite architecture is characterized by intricate wooden carving, a low-slung conical roof, and a pillared facade. The double palace was built in 1792 CE by Kodava king Dodda Veerrajendra. After escaping the invasion of Tipu Sultan, he found solace in the construction of the palace. It served as a hunting lodge and a refuge during tumultuous times. However,Nalaknad Palace was the last refuge of Chikka Veerarajendra, the final king of Kodagu, before British deposition.
Restoration Efforts
Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums of Karnataka has designated it a protected monument. The palace underwent renovation efforts by INTACH (the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage).
Future Aspirations: A Museum in the Making
With aspirations to share the cultural wealth, there are proposals to transform Nalaknad Palace into a museum. This envisioned museum aims to showcase the crafts and weapons of the local Kodagu region, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the historical context.
Timing
Nalaknad Palace welcomes visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., allowing them to immerse themselves in the regal ambiance and relive the history etched within its walls.
