About Tagore Park
Tagore Park, also known as Light House Hill Garden, is a picturesque park known for its lush greenery and breathtaking sea views. Located just 1 kilometre from Mangalore railway station, the park is situated on Light House Hill Road in the heart of Mangalore. The park is named after the great Indian Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.
History and Heritage
Built in the 18th century by Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan , Tagore Park has undergone various renovations and enhancements. The park’s recent renovation features such as a serene garden and a small artificial stream, creating an idyllic ambiance for relaxation and contemplation.
It is envisioned as a tranquil oasis where locals and travellers alike could escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Scenic Delights and Attractions
One of the special attractions in the park is the lighthouse that was constructed in 1900. Once from the lighthouse, one has a mesmerising panorama of the sea, with sailing boats and ships dotting the horizon. Although it’s no longer operational.
But its elevated location offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the bustling city below. Visitors can revel in the beauty of the sunset, soak in the refreshing sea breeze, and marvel at the rhythmic dance of the waves against the shore.
Cultural Significance and Amenities
At the base of the lighthouse, visitors should visit the Karnad Sadashiv Rao Reading Room, named after the renowned freedom fighter. This public library offers a quiet refuge for book lovers and scholars. Additionally, the park’s proximity to St. Aloysius Chapel and Milagres Church makes it an ideal stop for those exploring Mangalore’s architectural and historical landmarks.
Timing
Tagore Park is open to the public from 9 AM to 12 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM.
