About Palaruvi Falls
Nestled in the lush forests of Kollam district, Palaruvi Falls is one of Kerala’s most striking waterfalls, plunging from a height of about 300 feet (91 meters). Its name, which means “stream of milk” in Malayalam, comes from the sight of the milky-white waters cascading down rocky cliffs into a serene pool below.
Surrounded by dense greenery and misty hills, the waterfall is a favorite among nature lovers, trekkers, and those seeking a refreshing escape in the Western Ghats.
Nature and Experience
Palaruvi is more than just a visual delight; the waters are believed to have medicinal qualities due to the herbs and minerals they pick up from the surrounding forests. At the base, a natural pool forms, where visitors can enjoy a safe dip in the cool, clear waters.
The site is also dotted with shrines and sacred groves, reflecting the traditional belief that nature here holds divine significance. The best time to visit is during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons (June to January), when the falls are at their most spectacular.
How to Reach Palaruvi Falls
Reaching Palaruvi is convenient through multiple routes. The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport (72 km), while Kollam Junction railway station (75 km) connects the destination with other cities.
By road, the falls are about 75 km from Kollam town and 35 km from Punalur, located along the scenic Kollam–Shencottah road. Visitors can use KSRTC buses, taxis, or private vehicles to reach the entrance point, after which a short trek through the forest leads to the waterfall, adding a sense of adventure to the journey
