About Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated in the southern part of the Western Ghats, about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Kerala’s most scenic and ecologically diverse reserves.
Spread across 128 square kilometers, the sanctuary is built around the Neyyar Dam and reservoir, offering a mix of wildlife experiences, boating, and trekking. Its unique landscape of tropical forests, grasslands, and rolling hills makes it an excellent getaway for nature lovers.
Flora and Fauna
The sanctuary harbors a wide range of species, thanks to its varied habitats. Large mammals such as elephants, sloth bears, gaur, sambars, and leopards roam the forests, while the reservoir area attracts numerous birds and reptiles.
Neyyar is particularly known for its Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre, where visitors can learn about and observe mugger crocodiles up close. The sanctuary also shelters Lion Safari Park and a Deer Rehabilitation Centre, making it unique compared to other reserves in Kerala.
With over 170 bird species, Neyyar is also a great spot for birdwatchers, featuring kingfishers, darters, herons, and endemic Western Ghats species.
