About Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in the Western Ghats, about 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush, biodiversity-rich reserve spread over 75 square kilometers.
Established in 1983 around the Peppara Dam on the Karamana River, the sanctuary is known for its tropical forests, rugged terrain, and captivating wildlife. It forms part of the larger Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized region celebrated for its rich flora and fauna.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
Peppara is home to a fascinating range of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Mammals like elephants, gaur, sambar deer, Nilgiri langurs, sloth bears, and wild boars inhabit its forests.
The sanctuary is also rich in birdlife, with over 200 recorded species, including the Malabar Hornbill, Great Indian Hornbill, and numerous water birds around the reservoir. Reptiles, amphibians, and a wide variety of butterflies further add to its ecological significance.
The sanctuary’s terrain includes tropical moist evergreen forests, deciduous forests, and grasslands, offering diverse habitats for species to thrive.

Visitors to Peppara can enjoy trekking trails, nature walks, and birdwatching experiences, especially with guided eco-tours organized by the Forest Department.
The Peppara Dam and reservoir not only supply drinking water to Thiruvananthapuram but also provide a scenic backdrop for boating and photography. The sanctuary also offers glimpses of tribal settlements, allowing travelers to learn about the traditional lifestyle of local communities.
How to Reach Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
By Air: The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport, located around 44 km away. Taxis and rental cars are available from the airport.
By Rail: Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (38 km) is the closest major railhead, with excellent connectivity to Kerala and other Indian cities.
By Road: The sanctuary is about 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram city, accessible via Nedumangad and Vithura. Regular KSRTC buses operate up to Vithura, from where jeeps or private taxis can be hired.
