A monument of national importance, the Chausath Yogini temple is a significant temple that is located in the western group of temples in Khajuraho. Chausath Yogini temple is a remarkable monument that comes under the administration of the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple is situated just 1.5 km from the Kandriya Bus stand and just 1 km away from the renowned Knadariya Mahadev temple. The Oldest Surviving Temple in Khajuraho
Derived from the word “Chausath” meaning 64, is home to the 64 yoginis who once reside inside the wall serving the revered goddess Kali. Legend says that goddess Kali herself was served in the 65th cell. But during the course of time, only 35 shrines remain a fraction of the original 65. Chausath Yogini temple was built by the Chandela rulers who were the erstwhile ruler of Khajuraho.
The architecture of Chausath Yogini temple
One of the earliest structure in Khajuraho, the temple exhibit a unique open-air quadrangular design. A decisive charm is a boast from coarse granite that is used in the temple all 64 temples resting on a massive elevated platform in an open expansive open area. A small doorway with a curvilinear shikhara roof is a characteristic feature of these diminutive sizes shrines. At the back wall, facing the entrance a main shrine is believed to have served.
A Tale of Lost Sculptures
While time has faded the intricate sculptures that once adorned the Chausath Yogini Temple, a few remarkable statues have managed to survive. Among the temple ruins, archaeologists discovered three grand statues of goddesses, now proudly displayed at the Khajuraho Museum. These ancient sculptures have been identified as representations of Brahmani, Maheshwari, and Hingalaja or Mahishamardini. Their exquisite craftsmanship and historical significance make them some of the oldest sculptures found in Khajuraho.
During excavation, archaeologists found many intricate sculptures that once adorned the Chausath Yogini temple. Out of this, only a few have managed to survive. The major ones are three grand statues of goddesses which are now displayed at the Khajuraho Museum. It has been identified as a representation of Brahmani, Maheshwari, and Hingalaja or Mahishamardini. These old sculptures show the rich culture and heritage of Khajuraho.
