Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jain group of temples in Khajuraho is located in the southeastern part of India. As a collection of temples, the place is famous among its visitors.

The Parshvanath Temple: A Testament to Jain Architecture

The architectural marvel was constructed by a Jain family during the rule of the Chandela dynasty. The temples are considered older than the main temples of Khajuraho and stand testament to the rich cultural heritage. Surrounded by a protective wall, the Parshvnath temple lies at the heart of the Jain group and was constructed in the 10th century.

The temple showcases an impressive architectural layout that underwent a transformation in 1860 when a statue of Lord Parshvanth was installed, leading to its current name. Entry to the temple is through an entrance porch that connects further small and large halls, a vestibule, and a sanctum. The ceiling of the temple is adorned with a chain and floral patterns.

Jain and Vaishnavite themes are beautifully depicted on the outer walls of the temples. Celestial beings, dancers, musicians, and divine couples enhance the world. Additionally, sculptures depicting Hanuman, Brahma, Vishnu- Lakshmi, and Ram are kept in the temple.

The Adinath Temple: Simplicity and Elegance Combined

Adinath temple lies adjacent to Parshvanath temple. It has three bands of sculptures and a semi-circular outer wall. The vibrant ambiance of the sculpture depicts Yakshas, Apsaras, Vidyadhars, and Apsars. These idols date back to the rule of King Madanavarman, in 1027 CE.

The Shantinath Temple: A Fusion of Beauty and Spirituality

Another temple that belongs to the Jain group is the Shantinath temple. It’s a mix of several temples and houses and multiple shrines. 14 feet high-standing idol of Lord Shaninath, the 16th Jain Tirthankar, is an impressive highlight of the Shantinath temple.

The temple also provides a facility of a Dharamshala to visitors. It also has a nice gallery that stores the vast collection of photographs of significant Jain monuments across India.
