History of Bhaja Caves

Bhaja Caves are a collection of 22 awe-inspiring rock-cut sanctuaries. Located on the eastern shores of the Deccan, These caves have served as a physical link to the ancient trade routes from the Arabian Sea. The architectural brilliance of these caves exudes an air of elegance and grandeur.

Architecture of Bhaja Caves

Among all the caves, the earliest of its kind, Cave 12, boasts an apsidal hall partitioned into a central nave and side aisles by an array of 27 ornate pillars. Wooden beams and the ceiling’s vaulted design contribute to its timeless allure. A stupa at the hall’s far end is covered with a wooden umbrella and adds a spiritual element.

The allure of the Bhaja Caves is their rock-cut Sanctuaries. Among these caves, Cave 18 is a wonderful spectacle. The tranquil monastery has a rectangular hall that is complemented by a pillared verandah at the fort. The walls of the caves are decorated with various depictions of the Sun God Surya and Lord Indira. The depiction of a woman playing the table gives a fascinating insight into the history of the Table.

Apart from Cave 18, the Bhaja Caves are comprised of various monasteries that have featured halls and inviting verandas. 14 stupas in arrays are the defining feature of the cave 18. It’s a tribute to the resident monks who found their eternal rest in Bhaja. Notable among these stupas is an irregular excavation containing five stupas within and nine outside. An inscription bearing the names of three monks—Dhammagiri, Ampinika, and Sanghdina—adds an intimate touch to the site.

The allure of the Bhaja Caves goes beyond their rock-cut sanctuaries. Especially in the monsoon season, a seasonal waterfall provides a spectacle for visitors to enjoy. The harmonious blend of nature and heritage complements the historical marvel of Bhaja Caves.
