Rajmachi Fort is one of the best places to visit in Lonavala. It is an ancient fort that is popular among visitors as a trekking destination. Located in the Pune district of Maharashtra, it is just 82 km from Mumbai, 15 km from Lonavala, and 15 km from Khandala. In this article, we will delve into its rich historical significance, breathtaking views, and stunning landscape.
History and Importance of Rajmachi Fort
Originally constructed by the Satvahanas, Rajmachi Fort was strategically built to control Bhort Ghat, the historical trade route between Khandala and Khopoli on the Mumbai-Pune route. Later, the great Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort along with the neighboring forts from the Adilshahi ruler of Bijapur. The Mughals captured the fort from the Marathas under the emperor Aurangzeb in 1704 CE. But the Marathas managed to regain control in 1705 CE. Sahu Maharaj took over control of the fort in 1713 CE. Eventually, in 1818 CE, the British took over control with the downfall of the Marathas.
Architecture of Rajmachi Fort
A treasure trove of architecture, Rajmachi Fort consists of two citadels named Manaranajan forts and Shrivardhan. Through massive gateways, you enter the fort, which consists of administrative centers, residential units, water reservoirs, and secret gates for exit. At the fort, a panoramic view of the surrounding area, especially sunrise and sunset, is a must. Temple Kal Bhairav in the fort is a significant attraction that is nestled in the gorge between Manaranjan and Shrivarshan forts.
Kondhane Caves: The Buddhist Legacy
Another important aspect of Rajmachi Fort is the ancient Bhuddist caves known as Kondhane Caves. These caves have existed since ancient times and date back to approximately 200 BC. Located on the western side of the Rajmachi plateau, caves have exquisite Buddhist architecture like viharas and stupas. Though some parts of the caves suffered damage in the earthquake, Chaitya remains intact and serves as a testament to the region’s rich heritage.
Trekking Routes to Rajmachi Fort
