About Nohsngithiang Falls
Nohsngithiang Falls, also popularly called the Seven Sisters Falls, is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of Meghalaya. Located near Mawsmai village in Cherrapunji (Sohra), the waterfall cascades down a height of about 315 meters, forming seven distinct streams that flow side by side, symbolizing the seven northeastern states of India.
During the monsoon season, the Seven Sisters Falls come alive with a thunderous roar, while in winter, the reduced flow reveals the sheer vertical cliffs. The falls are often wrapped in clouds and mist, adding to the mystic aura of the Khasi Hills.
Natural Beauty and Significance
What makes Nohsngithiang Falls extraordinary is its seven-segmented structure and the way the sun’s rays create a golden glow at sunset, offering photographers and nature lovers a magical view. The surrounding limestone cliffs and lush Khasi Hills enhance its grandeur.
Locals consider the falls not just a tourist attraction but a cultural symbol of unity among the seven sisters of Northeast India. Monsoon is the best time to experience the falls in full force, though post-monsoon offers clearer skies for photography.
Activities and Experience
While the falls cannot be approached closely, the viewpoint near Mawsmai village provides a panoramic perspective. Tourists often combine a trip here with visits to Mawsmai Cave, Eco Park, and Thangkharang Park, which offer breathtaking views of the Bangladesh plains.
The falls are also a favorite stop for road trips along the Shillong–Cherrapunji tourist circuit. Birdwatching enthusiasts can spot species of the Eastern Himalayan range in the surrounding forests.
