Nongriat Village, nestled deep in the valleys near Cherrapunji, is one of the most enchanting destinations in Meghalaya. The Double-Decker Root Bridge is the centerpiece, drawing travelers from across the world. Along the trek, visitors encounter several smaller living root bridges, crystal-clear streams, and refreshing waterfalls like Rainbow Falls, where the water reflects magical hues under the sunlight.

How to Trek
Reaching Nongriat requires undertaking one of Meghalaya’s most iconic treks. The journey starts from Tyrna Village, about 12 km from Cherrapunji, where stone steps lead the way down into the valley. The trek consists of over 3,500 steps, descending steeply through dense forest canopies, suspension bridges, and small streams. While going down is relatively easier, the return climb can be quite challenging,
So it is recommended for those with moderate fitness levels. The trek usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours one way, but depending on stamina and breaks, it can be longer. It’s best to carry plenty of water, energy snacks, and wear good trekking shoes. Many travelers also prefer to spend a night in Nongriat at a homestay before making the climb back the next day.
How to Reach
By Road: The trek to Nongriat begins from Tyrna Village, which is about 12 km from Cherrapunji (Sohra) and well connected by shared taxis and local transport.
By Trek: From Tyrna, visitors must descend about 3,500 steps through lush hillsides, suspension bridges, and streams to reach Nongriat.
Nearest Airport: Shillong Airport (Umroi), about 90 km from Cherrapunji.
Nearest Railway Station: Guwahati Railway Station, around 150 km from Shillong, connected by road to Cherrapunji and Tyrna.
