Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra
Nanda Devi Raj Yatra, a yatra that takes place once every 12 years, is a pilgrimage that takes place in the dark fortnight of the Hindi month of Bhadav. It is believed that Nanda Devi visits her maternal home in the dark fortnight of Bhadav and is sent away to her in-law’s house on the day of Ashtami. Nanda Devi Yatra is the journey of a well-dressed bride from her maternal home to her in-laws. The yatra is enjoyed with great fanfare by making Nanda Devi sit in a doli and giving gifts like Kaleva, Dooj, food grains, jewellery, and clothes.
Once every 12 years, thousands of devotees celebrate the ritual with great joy.
Nanda Devi Fair, a 5-day festival, is hosted every year in the month of September.
History of Nanda Devi Temple
The history of the temple dates back to the 13th century when Papoda sub-Saste people established the Nanda Devi temple. They built the temple from the early rocks that are available in the region. The modern temple is a further advancement of that structure. The early people who started worshipping the temple were people from the villages of Varniyagaon, Pyankunti, and Papdi. According to local belief, when Nanda Devi visited, she fell in love with the place and decided to settle there.
Religious significance of Nanda Devi temple
The Bhavishya Purana mentions Nanda Devi, one of the Navadurgas, a group of goddesses. In the Himalayas, Nanda Devi is worshipped in the form of Shakti, including in places like Karuli, Hindoli, Narona, Dasoli, Talli Dhuri, and Nauti in Garhwal. Every year on Ashtami, a fair is organized that provides glimpses of the culture of Kumaon.
