Introduction: Where Munnar Touches the Sky

The Rajamalai Hills form the most iconic and accessible section of Eravikulam National Park near Munnar. Known for their rolling grasslands, misty slopes, and rare wildlife, these hills offer one of the most breathtaking high-altitude landscapes in South India.

For many travelers, Rajamalai is their first real encounter with the wild beauty of the Western Ghats—open, expansive, and alive with subtle movement.

Geography & Landscape: A Sea of Grasslands

Rajamalai lies in the southern region of Eravikulam National Park and represents the classic  shola–grassland ecosystem .

 # What defines the terrain:

* Vast rolling grasslands stretching across hills.

* Patches of dense shola forests in valleys.

* Cool, wind-swept ridges.

* Constantly shifting mist and clouds.

The elevation ranges between 1,600 m to over 2,000 m, creating a cool climate throughout the year. The landscape feels almost alpine, especially during early mornings when clouds drift across the hills.

Wildlife: Home of the Nilgiri Tahr

Rajamalai Hills are world-famous for the endangered:

* Nilgiri tahr.

This sure-footed mountain ungulate is often seen grazing calmly along the slopes, sometimes very close to visitors.

 # Other wildlife includes:

* Nilgiri langur.

* Indian gaur.

* Leopards (rare sightings)

 # Birdlife:

* Black and orange flycatcher.

* Kerala laughingthrush.

The open terrain makes wildlife spotting easier compared to dense forest parks.

Neelakurinji Phenomenon: Once in 12 Years

Rajamalai Hills become globally famous during the blooming of:

* Neelakurinji.

This rare flower carpets the hills in shades of blue-purple once every 12 years, transforming the entire landscape into a surreal floral valley. The last bloom occurred in 2018, and the next is expected around 2030.

Trekking Experience in Rajamalai

Unlike rugged wilderness treks, Rajamalai offers a  controlled and eco-friendly trekking experience .

 How it works:

* Visitors take a forest department bus to the base.

* From there, a  paved walking trail  leads into the hills.

* The walk is gentle and suitable for most fitness levels.

 # What you experience:

* Walking through open grasslands

* Panoramic views of valleys and peaks

Though not a hardcore trek, the experience is deeply scenic and accessible.
