A testament to the ancient architecture and religious significance, Bijamandal Temple also known as Vijayamandire temple is a must-visit destination for history and spiritual seekers alike. Its located in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh at a distance of 9 kilometers from the Sanchi Railway station.
Unveiling the Magnificence of Bijamandal Temple
The colossal temple dates back to the 11th century and was built during the reign of Parmara king Naravarman. Its intricate architectural design and grandeur are impressive to watch. It’s dedicated to the revered Goddess Charchika also known as Vijaya. There were remains of foundation stones which implies that construction was left unfinished.
However, over the course of time, an unfortunate incident happened. In 1682, Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of the temple in 1682. Now in its place, Alamgiri masjid stood where once Bihamandal temple once stood.
A Glimpse into the Past
According to the legends, it was a remarkable temple with a towering of 35 meters and a width of 39 meters. There were intricate columns and exquisitely carved statues to support the whole structure of the temple. The most notable sculptures were of Maheshmardini, an awe-inspiring eight-armed Ganesha, and the seven maternal figures of Sapta Matrikas in a dancing posture.
Step into History: The Ancillary Delights
Another intriguing monument nearby is the Heliodorus Pillar. Erected around 150 BC, this stone column was established by a Greek ambassador who embraced Hinduism during his time in Vidisha. As an emblem of his newfound faith, he left behind the pillar crowned with a statue of Garuda, a divine bird-like creature from Hindu mythology.
Another fascinating attraction adjacent to the Bihamandal temple is a fascinating stepwell dating back to the 17th century, The stepwell consists of towering pillars that depicts the life of lord Krishna making it one of the earliest artistic representation of Krishna life in central India.
