Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, located about 25 km from Agartala in Tripura, is one of the most celebrated natural attractions of the state. Spread across nearly 18.5 square kilometers, this sanctuary is a paradise for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and eco-tourists. Known for its rich biodiversity, scenic lakes, and lush greenery, Sepahijala is not just a wildlife conservation site but also a place of recreation, education, and research.

Biodiversity and Attractions

The sanctuary houses over 150 species of resident and migratory birds, making it a birdwatcher’s delight. During winters, one can spot rare migratory species like whistling teals, white ibis, and storks.

It is also famous for its primates, especially the rare Spectacled Monkey (Phayre’s Langur), which is unique to this region and draws wildlife researchers from across the world. Other animals like clouded leopards, jungle fowls, barking deer, and wild pigs add to the richness of its ecosystem.

Sepahijala also features Botanical and Zoological Gardens, artificial lakes for boating, and a butterfly park, making it an all-in-one destination for families and tourists. The tranquil surroundings, combined with the calls of exotic birds, create an enchanting environment for visitors.

Eco-Tourism and Experience

The sanctuary is divided into five distinct sections—zoo, botanical garden, lake complex, aviary, and deer park. Visitors can take part in boat rides on the lakes, enjoy nature trails through dense forests, and capture stunning views of birds and animals in their natural habitats. The place also has watchtowers for panoramic views of the sanctuary.

Sepahijala is not just a tourist spot but also serves as a center for environmental awareness and wildlife conservation. Local guides often share folk tales and stories about the forest, adding cultural depth to the visit.
