The Alangudi Guru Bhagavan Temple, also known as the Abathsahayeswarar Temple, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Guru (also known as Brihaspati or Jupiter ). It is located in Alangudi , a village in the Tiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu , India. This temple is part of the Navagraha Temples in Tamil Nadu, a series of temples each dedicated to one of the nine planetary deities of Hindu astrology (Navagrahas).
Worshippers believe that praying to Lord Guru brings good fortune, knowledge, and spiritual wisdom. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Abathsahayeswarar (the “Saviour of Those in Distress”), and the temple also houses an idol of Guru Bhagavan.
Mythology
According to Indian mythology, the guru performed penance here after being swallowed by a demon named Alagasuran. After this, Shiva appeared and protected Guru, hence the deity’s name, “Abathsahayeswarar.” It is also believed that Goddess Parvati performed penance at Alangudi to obtain the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Architecture
Made in traditional dravidian architecture. It has a prominent Rajagopuram (main entrance tower) with intricate carvings depicting mythological figures and celestial beings. Amrita Pushkarani, or a sacred pond inside the temple where devotees take a holy dip before entering the temple to purify themselves.
The temple complex consists of several shrines and halls with sculptures of various deities that illustrate key events from Hindu mythology.
Festivals and Celebrations
The Guru Peyarchi festival, which celebrates the transit of the planet Guru (Jupiter), is a major event at the temple, which attracts thousands of devotees. During this time, special rituals and prayers are performed.
Maha Shivaratri, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is also celebrated with great devotion.

Alangudi is located around 17 km from Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu and is easily accessible by road.
