Ancient History
Historically known as Daanpur, the region was under the rule of the Katyur dynasty during the 7th century. Later, with the disintegration of the Katyur kingdom, Raja Balu Kalyan was annexed in 1565. He added Damanpur, Pali, Barhamandal and Mankot to Kumaon.
Gorkha invasion
The Gorkha invasion was an important historical event that changed the history of the region. In 1791, the region came under the control of the Gurkhas of Nepal. They held power for 24 years and were later defeated by the British in 1814. They surrendIned the region under the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816.
Formation as a District
In 1974, Bageshwar was declared a separate tehsil, which later became a pargana in 1976. However, the demands for declaring a separate district never stop. In 1985, to assuage demands from different political parties and regional people, Bageshwar was made a new district of Uttar Pradesh.
