A Brief History of Gandhi Hall

Gandhi Hall was initially known as King Edward Hall and was inaugurated by the Prince of Wales, George V, in 1905.  The architect of this building was Mr. Charles Frederick Stevens from Mumbai, who built this marvelous structure in 1904. The total cost of the construction was 2,50,000. After independence, in 1948, King Edward Hall was renamed Gandhi Hall by H.H. Yeshwan Rao Holkar II.

What makes Gandhi Hall special?

The indo-gothic architecture style building is made from white and red sandstone. It has impressive domes and minarets that set it apart from the other historical buildings in Indore. The most notable feature is the clock tower or Ghantagar, that lights up during the three national festivals: Republic Day, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, and Independence Day.

Other Attractions at Gandhi Hall

Apart from the impressive structure, Gandhi Hall has a library, a temple, and a children’s park on its premises. The central hall is very large and can accommodate up to 2000 people for art and cultural exhibitions. Several events like the Jatra, book exhibition, handicraft fair, and mango fair are also hosted in the hall.
