One of the world’s largest private residences, Umaid Bhawan Palace is a remarkable architectural structure that is situated on Chittar Hill in Jodhpur City, Rajasthan, India. With exquisite architecture and a rich history, the Umaid Bhawan Palace has located at a distance of 3.5 km from Jodhpur Junction and 6 km from the Jodhpur Fort.
Construction of this Opulent place started with the foundation-laying ceremony on November 18, 1929. However, due to various facts, the actual construction of the palace began in 1943 and took 16 years to complete. The name of the palace is derived from Maharaja Umaid Singh, who is the grandfather of the present Maharaja Gaj Singh.
History of Umaid Bhawan Palace
Built during the period of drought and famine in Johpur, Umaid Bahwan palace construction provided employment opportunities to alleviate the hardships faced by his subjects and revive the local economy. A symbol of resilience and community welfare, the magnificent structure is made of sandstone.
Indian Architect Budhmal Rai and renowned Edwardian architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester have collaborated to design this palatial architecture. A blend of Indian and European architectural styles has a central dome with a height of 32 meters. Harmioun’s fusion of art deco elements and timeless Hindu architectural tradition is an homage to the rich Rajput traditions.
At present, one wing of the palace serves as the royal residence of Maharaja Gaj Singh, who resides there along with his family. Other parts or wings of the palace have been converted into five-star hotels. A testament to opulence and refinement, Umaid Bhawan Palace is owned by the Taj group of hotels. Lush gardens spread over an area of 26 acres inside the palace captivate visitors with their regal charm.
Museum and Exquisite Collections
A visit to the Umaid Bhawan Palace is incomplete without visiting the museum. Exquisite glass, porcelain wares, and historical specimens are among the remarkable collections that are kept inside the Museum. All these things provide insights into the Palace’s history. The symbolic flag gifted to Maharaja Jaswant Sisngh by Queen Victoria in 1877 is a notable attraction within the museum. Additionally, the intriguing collection of clocks, windmills, and lighthouses adds additional allure.
